  • Uncle Ernest the pharmacist

I’m preparing for a major exercise digitally scanning a whole lot of old family photos (first half of 20th century) so have been checking over my family history records of those I know feature. It might make it easer to organise the scans and make sure all relevant info is gleaned from attached notes etc. The Laddiman family from Shropshire certainly are in the mix. Ernest John Laddiman married my great aunt Eliza Neal in Norwich, 1905, and at the 1911 census they were living at  » »

  • Better dead than in the workhouse?

I’ve now had a chance to take more of a look at the new Norfolk records which have appeared recently on familysearch.org (see last blog post). Images of a variety of documents, including Poor Law Union records (workhouse), some Non-Conformist church records (rather limited in Norwich at least – 2 Congregational , 1 Quaker, 1 Unitarian, covering minutes, membership and BMD), Bishops transcripts (which I’m not familiar with) and some more . It is purely an image database – no index other than to location such  » »

  • Looking ahead to look behind

To follow up the traditional year-end top moments, the traditional look forward for 2011. Some of the possibilities: A visit to the Tonypandy area, and Trealaw cemetery in particular (the list of tree members buried there just keeps expanding), really ought to be on the to do list. Scanning to digital form old family photos. For this, it would be great if the Flip-Pal portable scanner got released in the UK soon, preferably not at straight dollar to pound pricing – see this ‘not-a-review’ post. » »

Bob, Harry?, Stan, Nellie One photo was labelled ‘School-van Oak River’ – a sledge cart with high sides pulled by 2 horses, with Oak River (and some less legible writing) written on the side. • Death of Laura Curtis

    Death of Laura Curtis

Great aunt Laura was originally only a name in a list of birthdays and deaths kept by our gran, her younger sister. Laura’s great granddaughter then made contact via the Ancestry website and our subsequent researches added some more life, and unfortunately rather a lot of death, to the bare bones. Marriage and baby Laura Emma Neal, born June 1885 Norwich, was the seventh child (out of eleven) of Robert Smith Neal/Ellen Elizabeth Watts. The rest of the Neal family did quite well, as teachers, locksmith,  » »
