  • TreeSync for Mac (UK) available soon

It looks like the new version of Family Tree Maker for the Apple Mac may actually arrive in the UK next week. At one stage showing on Amazon as due out 4th November, the site now says 11th January for release*. There will be some inevitable differences to the latest PC version, FTM 2012, but generally  they should be the same and importantly FTM Mac v2 includes the new TreeSync feature. It comes with a six month Premium Ancestry.co.uk sub so a good buy at  » »

  • First update for Family Tree Maker 2012

Note: this is now an old article – please see the documentation of further updates to FTM 2012 on our FTM Notes page instead. Family Tree Maker 2012 has a mandatory update – version 21.0.0.452 (mine was previously .388, presumably the UK release version number). The install routine is a little annoying – three confirmation boxes for the upgrade to run, with only one having any options other than ‘cancel’ (and unlikely that you’d want to change the selection). The update doesn’t give a confirmation that  » »

  • Grappling with the new TreeSync

The new 2012 UK version of Family Tree Maker (FTM) arrived on Saturday. The Platinum edition comes with 6 months access to Ancestry.co.uk Premium membership – parish records, occupations and all other UK records as well as the standard Births, Marriages, Deaths and Census (link to order FTM from Amazon). Here’s a piece on my experience and thoughts so far. Adding the Ancestry subscription The basic installation was as straightforward to do as it usually is, although it automatically added a program to the existing .net  » »

  • One family history TV show ends, another starts

The latest series of Who Do You Think You Are finished last night with Tracey Emin discovering her gipsy roots. Available on iPlayer until 10pm 19th October (2011). So the Yesterday channel has timed a new family history programme well, starting next week. With the title ‘Find My Past’, this is closely connected to the genealogy website of that name, which says: “Each week, we take three members of the public on a journey to discover how they are related to someone from a significant historical  » »

  • Two weeks of freebies from Ancestry

I promise that Cutlock & Co isn’t going to turn into a plugging site, but here’s another item about offerings from Ancestry worth noting. For a couple of weeks from today, 1st October, they are giving free access to some of their most popular collections from around the world, alongside a series of quick tutorials to help you make the most of them. (At 1st October, I can’t see where these tutorials might be, but they are usually quite good for beginners.)  Ancestry is releasing a  » »

  • Update tree software and Ancestry sub too

A few days ago I wrote about the new version of Family Tree Maker, the software connected with the Ancestry site but which can be used stand-alone. Today Amazon has remarkably good discounts for advance order – it’s due out 14th October in the UK. The ‘World Edition’ is at the cheapest I remember seeing it, at £64-02* against a list price of just over a hundred pounds. (The 2011 version is not as low.) Here’s the link: Family Tree Maker 2012 World Edition (PC).  » »
